The U.S. Postal Service will celebrate the Sun with a series of stamps called “Sun Science” forever stamps which depict solar activity as colorized by NASA.
The colors in the 20-stamp series to be released this year range from purple to aqua and were captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, also known as SDO.
The 20-stamp set features ten images that celebrate the science behind NASA’s ongoing exploration of our nearest star. Art director Antonio Alcalá of Studio A designed the stamps with digital images from the SDO.
The stamps show solar flares, sunspots and coronal loops. The SDO keeps watch over the Sun and has been doing so for 10 years.
The colors depicted in the stamps aren’t actually visible to the human eye. The images are colorized by NASA according to different wavelengths that reveal or highlight specific features of the sun’s activity.
